Online retail giant Amazon.com has been growing in leaps and bounds, hiring aggressively with nearly 1.3 lakh employees hired globally in the last year itself. However, at the Amazon.com headquarters in Seattle, the trend is witnessing a reversal of sorts, with the company laying off hundreds of workers.

At least a 'few hundred' positions are expected to be cut from the Seattle headquarters, a person familiar with the company's decision was quoted as saying by the Washington Post.

The layoffs, which began a few weeks back are reportedly a part of Amazon's strategy to trim its existing retail business and add jobs in rapidly-growing areas, for example, its Amazon Echo devices, digital entertainment and video, and the Amazon Web Services cloud business.

"As part of our annual planning process, we are making head count adjustments across the company -- small reductions in a couple of places and aggressive hiring in many others," said an Amazon spokesman, adding, "For affected employees, we work to find roles in the areas where we are hiring."

One of the largest private employers of the US, Amazon increased the headcount in the Seattle office from just 5,000 in 2010 to the current more than 40,000 employees.

Meanwhile, Amazon is also reportedly considering locations for a second headquarters in the North American region, where it plans to employ around 50,000 full-time workers, with many in high-paying office jobs.

Amazon reported its highest quarterly profits in its history this month with $1.9 billion (Rs. 12,200 crores) in profits on sales of $60.5 billion (Rs. 3.88 lakh crores), ending the year with 566,000 employees globally.
