As per the media reports, the power equipment manufacturer, BHEL has sent out a statement to commission a 250 MW thermal power unit at the Barauni Extension project of Bihar State Power Generation Company.

BHEL has so far commissioned around 4,400 MW capacity of a power plant in Bihar for various power developers, accounting for about 84% of the total installed capacity in the state. Notably, BHEL is India’s largest power plant equipment manufacturer with 20,000 MW manufacturing capacity per annum.

It leads the market in generation equipment space with 55% market share of the total installed power capacity. BHEL derived 79.2% of its revenue from power segment and remaining from the industrial segment (transmission, transportation, renewables, defence) in FY17.

The project has two segments namely (units 8 & 9) each of 250 MW power unit and it also has been reported that Unit 9 is also in advanced stages of execution and is expected to be commissioned shortly, a BHEL statement said.

The project was awarded to BHEL on engineering, procurement & construction (EPC) basis, including complete engineering, manufacturing and supply of equipment; erection & commissioning and civil works of all the plant utilities.

This project is being set up by BHEL on the ash dyke of old thermal units, which calls for special civil engineering for ground improvements. The utilisation of the unproductive ash dyke for this purpose also addresses the issue of land scarcity.
