Blackberry has filed a 117-page lawsuit against “relative latecomer” Facebook and its wholly-owned apps on Tuesday for copying BBM features and functionalities. The company claimed that it had patented concepts which Facebook and its owned apps aped in subsequent years without paying for it.

Sarah McKinney, Blackberry's spokesperson released a statement which reads, “As a cybersecurity and embedded software leader, BlackBerry’s view is that Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp could make great partners in our drive toward a securely connected future, and we continue to hold this door open to them. However, we have a strong claim that Facebook has infringed on our intellectual property, and after several years of dialogue, we also have an obligation to our shareholders to pursue appropriate legal remedies.”

Blackberry is seeking redressal for the harm caused by defendants' unlawful use of BlackBerry's intellectual property which may include injunctive relief and monetary damages, according to the complaint.

Facebook General Counsel Paul Grewal said that the company intends to fight the lawsuit. He said, “Blackberry’s suit sadly reflects the current state of its messaging business. Having abandoned its efforts to innovate, Blackberry is now looking to tax the innovation of others. We intend to fight.”

In 2017, BlackBerry sued Nokia Corp, alleging infringement of patents relating to 3G and 4G wireless communications technology. It also settled a $940 million patent deal with Qualcomm over royalty payments.
