Born as Sir Charles Spencer Chaplin on April 16, 1889, Charlie Chaplin continues to be an icon world-wide even decades after his death. A 3-time recipient of the Oscar award, Chaplin proved that even silence, when used creatively can move the audiences. Chaplin began his filmy journey during the 'silent era' and was an English comic actor, filmmaker and composer in his 75-year career.

Chaplin faced poverty and hardship in his childhood and was sent to a workhouse twice before the age of 9. At 19, he signed on to the prestigious Fred Karno company and went to America where he developed the 'Tramp' persona and earned a hefty fan following. Even when sound films became common in the 1930s, he preferred films without dialogue. In his later films  after 1947, he abandoned the 'Tramp' for more versatile characters. The talented Chaplin wrote, directed, produced, edited, starred in and composed music for most of his films.

The 1940s were a controversial time for Chaplin as he became increasingly political and his popularity declined. He was also accused of communist sympathies and an FBI investigation was opened against him, after which he left the US to settle in Switzerland.

Chaplin died on December 25, 1977 in Switzerland after suffering from a stroke in his sleep.

Although Charlie Chaplin is most famous for his acting in silent era, his statements have inspired countless people over the years.
