Is flaxseed the new wonder food? Flaxseeds are one of the most powerful plant seeds on the planet. Preliminary studies have shown that it may help reduce the risk of heart disease, cancer, stroke, and diabetes. That’s quite a tall order for a tiny seed that’s been around for centuries.

The health benefits of flaxseeds are:

Improving Blood Sugar: There is strong evidence to suggest that consuming flaxseeds every day improves glycemic control in obese men and women with pre- diabetes, consequently improving blood sugar level.

Protecting Skin Tissues:  A diet of flaxseeds may protect skin tissues from being damaged by radiation. Studies demonstrate that dietary flaxseed contains strong antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, which work as a protector against radiation pneumonopathy.

Cancer Protection: Consuming flaxseed may help protect against prostate, colon, and breast cancers. Flaxseed prevents the growth of cancerous cells because its omega-3 fatty acids disrupt malignant cells from clinging onto other body cells. In addition, the lignans in flaxseed have antiangiogenic properties, which stop tumors from forming new blood vessels in the body.

Lowering Cholesterol: Cholesterol is found in every cell of the body (both good and bad) and has important natural functions when it comes to digesting foods, producing hormones, and generating vitamin D. Researchers have found that bad cholesterol level gets lowered among men who include flaxseed in their diet.

Preventing Hot Flashes : A hot flash is a feeling of intense heat, not caused by external sources. Hot flashes can appear suddenly, your heart beating faster than usual, your skin feeling warm, suddenly your face getting red or flushed sweating, especially in the upper body. A study published in the Journal of the Society for Integrative Oncology suggests that a dietary intake of flaxseed can decrease the risk of hot flashes among postmenopausal women.

Not only does flaxseed seem to alleviate hot flashes, but it appears to have overall health and psychological benefits as well.
