UN recognised initiative by Lawyer-activist Afroz Shah to clear up the garbage off the Versova Beach for more than 2 years now has been suspended. The generous leader gave up after 109 weeks of unstopping clean-up drive due to lack of government support.

Abusive goons and administrative apathy have provoked the ocean lover to suspend the campaign which started in October 2015 after removing more than 5 million kgs of trash from the beach with help of a number of responsible citizens.

Irrespective of their age, people participated in the initiative including the megastar Amitabh Bachchan. Oscar-winning actor Leonardo Di Caprio also shared the initiative on Instagram and also applauded the efforts made by Shah.

Disappointed in himself and system, Afroz is shattered with the failure of his campaign. He shared with Scoopwoop, "I've failed myself, and I've failed this country. We had begun this campaign against the mindset of littering in public spaces. And if this kind of institutional lethargy is the feedback for the work of thousands of volunteers over 2 years, then I have failed as an individual."

Shah expressed his disapproval for the municipal bodies and their lack of capability along with the goons who have been stopping him from working. He said, "It had been going on for the past 4-6 weeks, where some men would threaten our guy operating the JCB tractor with bamboo sticks, and hurling abuses at the others. If I and others like me are going to be heckled for something our voluntary efforts, then where are we going as a country?"

Afroz Shah was awarded UN Environment's Champion of the Earth award for his contribution in changing the landscape of Versova Beach. His efforts were applauded by not just PM Narendra Modi but also by Vice-President Venkaiah Naidu and many others.
