After a disastrous showing in the second leg of the last-16 tie against Sevilla in the UEFA Champions League, Manchester United were left with only one major trophy to play for this season.

Their quarter-final encounter with Brighton & Hove Albion reinstated their intent of finishing the 2017/18 campaign with a trophy. The defeated the fellow Premier League side by 2-0. Romelu Lukaku and Nemanja Matic scored the goals in either half.

Meanwhile, Tottenham Hotspur trounced Swansea City by 3-0. Their star striker and main goalscorer Harry Kane was injured and will be unavailable until the end of the season. His injury came as a horror to a nation as a whole with the FIFA World Cup 2018 in Russia is around the corner. He is expected to be fit and lead the lineup by then.

Elsewhere, Chelsea who themselves were ousted by Spanish La Liga leaders Barcelona after a Lionel Messi masterclass, made their way into the semi-final after a tough outing against Leicester City. Spanish winger Pedro’s extra-time goal took the Blues past the former Premier League Champions into the next round.

Relegation-threatened Southampton have made their way into the semi-final after 15 years, and are playing under the new management of Mark Hughes. Hughes was hired this week to replace the sacked Mauricio Pellegrino and the former Southampton striker had an immediate impact on his new team. Hughes' main goal is to help Southampton preserve their top-flight status and they dropped into the relegation zone on Saturday. Nevertheless, a trip to Wembley in the semi-finals could provide a welcome tonic as Hughes tries to make his presence felt.

The semi-finals will be played on April 21-22, 2018.
