Bollywood actor Riteish Deshmukh, nearly 15 years after making his filmy debut is set to follow in the footsteps of his politician father Vilasrao Deshmukh by contesting the 2019 Lok Sabha elections from Congress party in the Latur constituency, media reported on Wednesday.

Vilasrao Deshmukh, a former two-term chief minister of Maharashtra from 1999 to 2003 and from 2004 to 2008, was the MLA from the Latur constituency, a post which later was won by his son Amit Deshmukh for two consecutive terms. The former Maharashtra CM passed away in 2012 due to multiple organ failure.

While Riteish initially opted for a career in acting as opposed to entering the field of politics like his brothers Amit and Dheeraj Deshmukh, he has been vocal in his support to the Congress party and Congress President Rahul Gandhi through his twitter handle.

Riteish made his debut in 2003 with the film Tujhe Meri Kasam and has since then appeared in more than 45 movies. He is known for his impeccable comic timing and has acted in various franchises including Masti, Housefull and Kya Kool Hain Hum, endearing him to the public. Riteish married his 'Masti' co-star Genelia D'Souza in 2012 and shares 2 sons with her.

Currently, Riteish is working on the third instalment of the Dhamaal franchise, 'Total Dhamaal' with Anil Kapoor, Madhuri Dixit and Ajay Devgn and is also filming for Housefull 4 with Akshay Kumar and Bobby Deol.

Although the report of Riteish joining politics is yet to be confirmed by the actor himself or the Congress party, the field of politics has multiple examples of sons joining fathers in politics, for example RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav and his sons Tej Pratap and Tejashwi and Samajwadi Party's Mulayam Singh Yadav and Akhilesh Yadav.
