Campaigning for the first phase of the Gujarat elections taking place on December 9 comes to an end on Thursday. The upcoming Gujarat state assembly elections witnessed aggressive campaigning from both the BJP and Congress, with forerunners Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Rahul Gandhi addressing numerous rallies.

In the first phase of the Gujarat elections, the polling will take place for a total of 89 seats, out of the overall 182. For the 89 seats, located across the Saurashtra and South Gujarat regions, 977 candidates will be competing, including Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani.

Both the Saurashtra and Kutch regions that are going to polls are important for the ruling BJP party as both the regions have the highest concentration of seats in the first phase of polls, with a total of 58 seats. According to experts, the party winning the maximum number of seats from the Saurashtra and Kutch areas will have better chances to form the next government in the state.

Meanwhile, for the 12 seats in Surat, considered to be the diamond and textile hub of the country, the affects of demonetisation and Goods and Services Tax (GST) is likely to have repercussions for the BJP.

In the previous state assembly elections in 2012, from the 58 Saurashtra and Kutch seats, BJP had won 35 seats, the Congress won 20, the now-defunct Gujarat Parivartan Party (GPP) won 2 seats and the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) won 1 seat.

The second and final phase of the Gujarat polls will be held on December 14 and the counting of votes is to take place on December 18.
