Congress President Rahul Gandhi on Monday pledged support of the party to the more than 35,000 protesting farmers of Maharashtra, who walked 180 km in the span of a week to reach Mumbai and put forth their demands to the state assembly. The massive protest by the farmers led by the Left-affiliated All India Kisan Sabha (AIKS) carrying red flags turned the roads into a virtual sea of red.

Rahul Gandhi hailed the initiative in a tweet, pledging the support of the Congress party with the farmers and tribals.

"The mammoth #FarmersMarchToMumbai is a stunning example of people’s power. The Congress party stands with the Farmers & Tribals marching to protest against the Central & State Govts. apathy. I appeal to PM Modi and the CM to not stand on ego and to accept their just demands," tweeted the Congress president.

The major demands of the protesting farmers and tribals are complete loan waiver, profit of 1.5 times input cost for all major agriculture commodities and an immediate implementation of M.S. Swaminathan committee's recommendations.

Several political parties have extended support to the farmers, including Raj Thackeray-led Maharashtra Navnirman Sena, Shiv Sena, the Aam Aadmi Party and the Nationalist Congress Party.
