FIFA World Cup: France Bags Victory Over Uruguay In Quarter Finals, Advances To Semis

Raphael Varane and Antonie Griezmann scored as the French men progressed to the semifinals of the FIFA World Cup 2018 on Friday. The Les Bleus knocked out Uruguay 2-0 in the first quarter-final match at Nizhny Novgorod Stadium.

The centre-back Raphael Varane came with the opener for France when he posted the ball into the net with a header from Antoine Griezmann's corner.

Martin Caceres tried to post the ball into the net to equalize before the half-time but his attempt was denied by miraculous full-length dive from French goalkeeper Hugo Lloris.

In order to turn the tables, Uruguay's coach Oscar Tabarez sent Maxi Lopez and Cristian Rodriguez in the second-half. The match slipped from Uruguay's hand when a Griezmann shot deceived Fernando Muslera and slipped through the keeper’s hands and over the line.


The team which had conceded only once till the last match in the tournament had conceded twice in 61 minutes of the quarterfinal match.  

Uruguay the presence of their main striker Edinson Cavani who was injured in the knockout match against Portugal.

France will face Belgium in the semifinals on July 10 at Saint Petersburg Stadium.
