Sebastian Vettel takes pole position for a second successive race in the 2018 Formula 1 season, after a scorching lap at the Chinese Grand Prix on Saturday.

After dominating the Bahrain GP last weekend, Ferrari turned up yet again as they outperformed their rivals in Mercedes as they locked out the front row yet again as Vettel’s teammate was second fastest after him.

Defending champion Lewis Hamilton got out-qualified by his teammate in Valtteri Bottas. The only time he was faster than the Finnish driver was when Bottas crashed out of Q3 at the Australian Grand Prix.

Red Bull racing were again solid in their qualifying with the young Dutch sensation Max Verstappen will start from the third grid qualifying P5 while his teammate Daniel Ricciardo will be alongside him in P6.

Ricciardo’s participation was in question at the start of the qualifying session as his car suffered a blown engine. However, his mechanics put a shift in and repaired his car in enough time to make sure he got his laps in and tok part in qualifying albeit his performance was hampered by this dent in momentum.

McLaren, who stand third in the constructor title had a shocking Saturday three raceweeks in a row and will have to rethink their strategy to qualify higher up the grid.

Force India will be delighted as their experienced driver Sergio Perez qualified P8.

Renault duo of Niko Hulkenberg and Carlos Sainz also made the top 10.

The top two teams, Mercedes and Ferrari have an engine mode which increases the power of their engine momentarily for qualifying. Red Bull in that regard will be happy with their position on the grid as their Renault power doesn’t possess this mode.

However, when the race-pace of Red Bull, Ferrari and Mercedes was compared this weekend, the difference in time was insignificant, with all signs showing that it will be another extremely competitive race.

The race takes place on Sunday, April 15.
