Enforcement Directorate, country’s top financial investigation agency on Saturday raided the properties belonging to Karti Chidambaram in Delhi and Chennai in connection with a money-laundering probe related to the Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) approval granted in 2006 by P Chidambaram. Karti is the son of former Finance Minister and top Congress leader P. Chidambaram and is facing a probe for his alleged role in facilitating the FIPB's clearance during his father’s tenure.

As per reports, raids were conducted at five different places in Delhi and Chennai. No incriminating document was recovered or seized from Chennai residence of Karti Chidambaram by ED. The agency had conducted similar searches on the premises of a relative of Karti Chidambaram and others in this case in December.

Reacting to the raid, Congress party’s chief spokesperson Randeep Surjewala lashed out at the government calling it a vendetta.

“Not surprised by the malicious vendetta being unleashed against senior Congress leaders including P Chidambaram & his son. Everyday PM Modi and his government use ED and CBI as captive puppets to seek revenge from opposition” he said.

Addressing media persons P. Chidambaram said, “There is no FIR concerning a scheduled crime by CBI or any agency. I anticipated they will search premises in Chennai again but in a comedy of errors they came to Jor Bagh (in Delhi) and officers told me that they thought Karti is an occupant of this house but he isn't.”

“They searched and found nothing but since they had to justify themselves they took papers of a statement made by government in the Parliament, few years back. The ED has no jurisdiction to investigate under PMLA” Chidambaram added.
