At least 2 people have been killed and 3 others injured by a knifeman shouting 'Allahu Akbar' (God is greatest) in central Paris on Saturday night before he was shot dead by the police. While a terror probe has been launched, the Islamic State (ISIS) militant group has claimed responsibility for the attack.

"The executor of the stabbing operation in the city of Paris is a soldier of the ISIS and the operation was carried out in response to the calls to target the coalition states," a "security source" said to ISIS's official Amaq news agency, according to AFP.

The attack took place near Paris's main opera house where there are many bars, restaurants and theatres. The man accused attacked 5 people with a knife as a result of which 1 victim was killed and 2 others in serious condition, out of which another victim succumbed to the injuries.

According to police sources quoted by AFP, one officer attempted to restrain the attacker using a taser, but when that failed another officer shot the suspect dead.

French President Emmanuel Macron condemned the attacks, saying, "France once again pays the price of blood."

France has been the target of several major terrorist attacks, including the November 2015 attacks that killed 130 in Paris and the Bastille Day truck attack in Nice in 2016 that killed more than 80. Lone wolf jihadists attacks have also targeted France in the recent past, with most be claimed by ISIS or being carried out in their name.

After the 2015 Paris attacks, a state of emergency was put in place, which was eventually lifted in November 2017 when the government passed a new law boosting the powers of the security forces.
